A Cup of Cold Water
“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciples, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42
A cup of cold water is trivial, but Jesus thinks highly of it. Many dedicated christians also started their service with a cup of cold water. “Because he is my deiciples” explains this person serves because he loves Jesus. Not for the sake of public relations, nor for boasting his brothely kindness. That’s why he is rewarded.
A cup of cold water may be worthless, but is pretty helpful for someone who is dehydrated. I was preaching at four different churches one Sunday in Southeast Asia. The weather was hot, and there was no water offered at the first three places. When I arrived at the fourth church, an usher offered me a glass of cold water. I gulped down the whole glass immediately and prayed to God for his reward.
Many may have trouble comprehending, but this is Jesus’ value judgement. He emphasized his promise by saying ,” I tell you the truth, this man will not lose his reward.”
Before 1994, I did not pay much attention to the ushers who distributed hymnals and Bibles to the congregation. But now I am so very weakened by my heart disease that I discovered having the strength to carry Bibles and give them out is a blessing.
Did I miss someone who needed a cup of cold water? Did I serve purely because I am His disciple? Jesus also promised “Whoever can be trusted with very little, can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little, will also be dishonest with much.” Luke 16:10.
